What is BioMaps?

It's your Google Maps (and more!) for exploring Australian biodiversity data!

With BioMaps you can explore where more than 100,000 species have been found and predict how climate change might affect where they can survive. The Australian Museum / Rio Tinto Partnership initiated the BioMaps project and provided funding for its development.

Currently BioMaps accesses data from all of the major Australian Museums (the Online Zoological Collections of Australian Museums network) and by working with the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), BioMaps will greatly increase the amount of biodiversity data available to users for mapping and analysis.

How does BioMaps work?

BioMaps provides tools for accessing and analysing biodiversity data. It enables visualisation of data through a map interface and provides analytical tools for helping planners and scientists to explore biodiversity distribution and investigate possible climate change impacts on biodiversity. By pioneering web delivery techniques for biodiversity data, BioMaps team is broadening access to both biodiversity information and innovative methodologies for analysing it.
